History of Peterborough Cathedral
Peterborough Cathedral is one of the finest Cathedrals in England with a history dating back over 1350 years. The Cathedral has a rich and wonderful heritage in addition to a blend of religious artefacts, diverse and interesting architecture, stories and legends.
Visitors to Peterborough Cathedral can expect to see:

Peterborough Guildhall (The Butter Cross)
Peterborough Guildhall as it is today was built in 1671 and used as a meeting place – it was also used as a court-room for the Quarter Sessions and a Parliamentary election hall.
Interesting facts:
- Between 1779 until 1839 – Mrs Ireland’s free school for boys was housed here
- Between 1876 to 1932 the Guildhall was used as the Town Hall
- During WWII the Guildhall was used for gas-mask distribution and was the fire-watching headquarters
- Until 1963 the Butter Market was held under the Guildhall
- The rooms in the Guildhall are no longer in use due to health and safety reasons however the area below the rooms is still used for various events in the centre of town and is also still a place where people meet
Queensgate Shopping Centre
- Queensgate Shopping Centre was opened on 9th March 1982 by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.
- The shopping centre has over 90 shops.
- A multi-storey car park
- The central bus station is located at Queensgate Shopping Centre
